This talk takes you on a journey down Rivière Jacotet to explore how a river’s physical shape dictates the wildlife living within it. Starting in the cool, shaded mountain headwaters, we will meet leaf-shredding invertebrates thriving under the forest canopy. Along the way, we will encounter “collectors” – tiny filter-feeding insects that act as the river’s vacuum cleaners by straining organic particles from the current.
As the river widens into the sunny foothills, light reaches the riverbed helping the growth of algae that feeds gobies and freshwater snails. Finally, where the river meets the sea, we will discover how the brackish estuary acts as a bustling nursery for young marine fish.
Through this journey from ridge to reef, discover why protecting the entire river system is essential to safeguarding Mauritius’ unique biodiversity and the health of its coral reefs.
