How do we create spaces for art, thought and community when the structures we need do not yet exist?

This conversation brings together members of resort, an artist-led collective based in Mauritius, to reflect on collective practice, self-organisation and the importance of creating our own containers for cultural work.

Drawing from experiences across exhibitions, residencies, libraries, publications, gatherings and community-based projects, the discussion will explore what it means to work collectively, share resources, sustain creative practice and build spaces of care and experimentation within and beyond institutional frameworks.

At its heart, the conversation is about making things possible: finding ways to work together, support one another, and imagine cultural futures that are generous, responsive and rooted in the realities of where we are.

About resort

resort is a container of care for artists by artists, fuelled by gestures towards decolonial futurity in local island territories and global contexts.

Grounded in feminist, inclusive, sustainable, playful and hopeful practices, resort creates spaces to soften in, come together, build community, and enact forms of resistance and solidarity. Through exhibitions, gatherings, travelling libraries, residencies, publications and community-led initiatives, resort provides space for critical thinking, experimentation, conversation and reflection.

Born in Mauritius, resort is initiated by a collective of artists and continuously nourished by researchers, cultural workers, environmental advocates and community activists. Drawing from personal, familial, cultural and shared forms of knowledge, the collective explores how art can help transform inherited realities into more hopeful futures.

The existence of resort is made possible through community effort, friendship and the collective sharing of resources beyond formal institutional structures. Fluid and evolving in form, the programme adapts over time to the needs, energies and possibilities of the communities that shape it.
